Billing and invoicing for the Proton Pass MSP pilot

The Proton Pass MSP program allows managed service providers to sell and manage Proton Pass licenses for their clients.

There are two separate billing paths for MSPs: your MSP admin licenses are billed as a normal subscription, and licenses purchased for your clients are invoiced separately by email.

In this article, we’ll explain how billing works for your licenses and how to use your cost reports to invoice your own clients.

How does billing work?

You’re billed for the licenses you allocate to your managed companies.

Each managed company in your MSP portal is a client organization. When you allocate licenses to it, you set how many Pass seats that client has available. Every allocated seat is billable, whether or not an end user is assigned to it.

Each day, we record the peak number of licenses allocated across all your managed companies. At the end of the month, we take the average of these daily peaks. That average is your billable license count, and your total cost is that count multiplied by the per-license price in your MSP agreement.

Because each day is counted at its peak, licenses allocated for any part of a day count for that whole.

Example

Say you have 100 licenses allocated across your managed companies. On day 25 of a 30-day month, you onboard a new client and allocate 30 more, bringing your total to 130.

Daily peaks: 100 licenses on days 1–24, and 130 on days 25–30. Even if you allocated the new licenses late in the day on day 25, that day counts at its peak of 130.

Monthly average: (24 × 100 + 6 × 130) ÷ 30 = 106 billable licenses

Billing is in arrears: Each invoice covers the previous calendar month.

How does invoicing work?

After a billing period closes, Proton generates your invoice and sends it to the billing contact on your MSP account. Payment terms are set out in your signed MSP Agreement. 

Your Proton invoice shows your total for the month. To know how much to invoice your own clients, download the monthly summary, which breaks your costs down by managed company, or the daily breakdown for day-level detail. Both are available from the Monthly Costs page.

How does reporting work?

To review your costs, go to Managed companies → Monthly Costs in your Proton Pass admin sidebar.

The Monthly cost overview shows your total cost for the current billing period, your billable licenses (the monthly average described above), your active managed companies, and your cost per license per month.

The Licenses usage chart plots each day’s peak allocated licenses against the monthly average. Hover over any day to see both figures.

Below the chart, Previous billing periods lists each month with its managed companies, billable licenses, and total cost. The current month is marked In progress and updates until the period closes.
